OKC Barons sign goaltender Ty Rimmer

The Oklahoma City Barons signed goaltender Ty Rimmer to an American Hockey League contract on Tuesday. It might be more than a training camp transaction.

The Barons' No. 1 goalie will be Richard Bachman, a 26-year-old NHL veteran who started 32 games with the Dallas Stars the past two years. But the backup spot could be up for grabs.

Olivier Roy, 22, was Yann Danis' backup last season. Roy went 9-9-1 with a solid 2.77 goals-against average, but Roy was inconsistent in the Edmonton Oilers' training camp.

Tyler Bunz, Edmonton's top goalie in Double-A last season, might get a shot at age 21.

Rimmer, 24, is a dark horse candidate but made a strong impression in training camp. Rimmer broke a 24-year-old Lethbridge record for saves in a season (2,106) last year in the Western Hockey League. In 65 games with the Hurricanes, Rimmer was 24-30-10 with a 3.19 GAA and a .912 saves percentage.

Asked after Monday's practice who has an edge for the backup job, Barons coach Todd Nelson quipped: “Whoever stops shots.”
