Oklahoma City police arrested a man on animal cruelty complaints Monday after they found a puppy covered in blood.
Deneoval Joel Derrick, 39, of Oklahoma City, was arrested on animal cruelty complaints and booked into the Oklahoma County jail.
Derrick was released from prison in November 2011 after serving more than 14 years on a child abuse charge, according to the state Corrections Department website.
Police were called about 3:45 p.m. Monday to an apartment at 4328 SE 46. Officers heard yelling and what sounded like a cage being thrown around, according to the police report.
Officers saw a man with a puppy on a leash. The 10-week-old puppy had blood on its face, chest and legs. The puppy's lip was severed and hanging down as the puppy whimpered, according to the report.
The puppy was taken by an Oklahoma City's animal welfare officer. The puppy is in a foster home, where it is receiving medical treatment and is “doing fine,” Trace Lyons, animal welfare field operations manager, said Tuesday.
