On Friday evening, the Oklahoma City Thunder roster, according to the team's official website, contained 16 players, one more than league rules permit.
DeAndre Liggins, the 6-foot-6, 209-pound guard out of Kentucky, was still included on that list.
But the departure of Liggins, waived Friday after being charged with domestic violence and kidnapping, now puts the Thunder's 2013-14 roster into better focus.
With 15 players left standing, the Thunder's roster could be set. Training camp begins in three weeks, but barring an unexpected roster move, what you see is what you'll get.
Competition for the team's 15th and final spot just became much less complex with Liggins gone. With his dismissal, Ryan Gomes, a journeyman who was not in the league last year, stands the most to gain.
Gomes, a seven-year veteran, was signed last month to what is believed to be a non-guaranteed contract, meaning he must make the team to earn his salary. He was expected to enter camp competing with Liggins, center Daniel Orton and other possible training camp invitees for the last spot.
The Thunder also drafted forward Grant Jerrett out of Arizona with the 40th overall pick, but it's unclear what the team's plans for him are.
Gomes, meanwhile, is the most proven out of the bunch. He's appeared in 482 games in his career, with stops in Boston, Minnesota and with the Los Angeles Clippers. A late second-round selection in 2005, Gomes holds career averages of 10.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 27.9 minutes.
Liggins' departure also takes a bit of pressure off Orton, who would have been faced with surviving the competition despite the Thunder's surplus of big men. Now, it appears Orton has a better chance at survival despite the presence of starter Kendrick Perkins, backup Hasheem Thabeet and 12th overall pick Steven Adams.
Still, it' wouldn't come as a shock if the Thunder chose to part ways with Orton anyway. It would be a move designed to save some cash and create an open roster spot in case it's needed during the regular season.
A lot still could happen.
But the 2013-14 roster became much clear Friday evening.
