The Oklahoma City Thunder finished last season with the third-highest local TV ratings among NBA teams, but that viewer interest can't carry over to the preseason. Only one of the Thunder's seven preseason games is being televised this season.
“We're focusing on preparing and using our resources for the regular-season games,” said Dan Mahoney, Thunder vice president of communications and community relations, on Tuesday. “The first year we did all of the games. Since then, we have not done the entire preseason schedule.”
A few NBA teams offer maximum coverage. All eight of the Dallas Mavericks are being televised, including the team's two European games on tape delay. All eight Chicago Bulls' games are being shown, and nine of 10 Los Angeles Lakers' games are being televised.
However, most teams follow the Thunder's philosophy in offering only minimal coverage. Fox Sports Oklahoma's only Thunder preseason telecast will be against Dallas at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 in Wichita, Kan.
Last season the Thunder's local ratings on FSOK averaged 6.58, trailing only San Antonio, 8.0, and Miami, 6.59, according to SportsBusiness Journal.
