Kevin Durant smoking sheds more light on his personality

by Darnell Mayberry Published: September 13, 2013

The best thing about watching young athletes mature off the playing surfaces is learning more about who they are as people at a time when they, in most cases, are still trying to figure out who they are themselves. And little by little, we continue to learn more about who Kevin Durant is away from the basketball court.

According to, Durant was out and about in Miami the other day, relaxing and enjoying his final two weeks before the start of the marathon NBA season. As part of his chosen downtime, Durant made his way into a hookah lounge.

If you don’t know what a hookah lounge is, it’s essentially an establishment where people can sit back and smoke flavored tobacco from a communal waterpipe that is placed at each table.

This is not the first time Durant has decided to unwind at a hookah lounge. He also was spotted in a hookah in Hong Kong last year. So apparently Durant smokes, at least on occasion. It’s one more thing we didn’t know about the Thunder’s star. It’s certainly not something that defines him, but it is something that is a part of his evolving personality that we wouldn’t otherwise know simply from listening to him talk basketball.

We can add this hobby to Durant’s fondness for producing music and getting tattoos, reading the bible and donating time and money to charity.

Durant, who will turn 25 at the end of this month, is slowly opening up and revealing more about himself as he ages. He’s still relatively private, and his growing international brand and the earning power that comes with that certainly makes it difficult for Durant to be too transparent. But these are the little things that help us get to know the players we watch, root for and, in some cases, admire. And little by little, Durant is helping us do that, revealing himself to us off the court as he continues to do the same on it.
