Perhaps the most irritating aspect about this year's Thunder team – for fans, players and especially coaches – has been all those turnovers.

OKC led the NBA and seemingly the free world in turnovers this season.

“They must have a thousand turnovers,” many fans might have wondered.

Actually, it was more than that. OKC officially was discredited with 1,079 turnovers, which is a league record for a 66-game season, as are all records this season.

The Thunder averaged 16.3 turnovers per game, which ranked dead last in the league.

Has any NBA champion ever led the league in turnovers that same season?

Not surprisingly, the answer is no, although the 1974 world champion Boston Celtics, the 1980 champion Los Angeles Lakers and the 1983 champion Philadelphia 76ers all finished fifth from the bottom.

A bit of good news for the Thunder: Those 16.3 giveaways per game are nowhere close to the most in NBA history.

The '74 Celtics averaged 21.9 turnovers per game, the '80 Lakers averaged 20.0 and the '83 Sixers averaged 19.8, all of which is explained by the fast-paced, high-scoring style of play at the time.

All-time turnover stats are sketchy. Turnovers didn't become an official NBA team stat until the 1973-74 season, along with blocks, steals, offensive rebounds.

How well or how poorly NBA champions fared in turnovers before then is not precisely known, but it's a safe bet Boston point guard Bob Cousy didn't throw the ball away much while winning six titles from 1957-63, nor did John Havlicek while winning eight championships.

Perhaps no championship franchise took better care of the ball than the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, who never ranked worst than fifth from the top (in this case, the bottom) in fewest turnovers en route to six titles in eight seasons.
