OKC Thunder: The good, the bad of 3rd pick

The good news about the Thunder getting the No. 3 overall pick: In 1984, Michael Jordan was the No. 3.

The bad news about the Thunder getting the No. 3 pick: In 1986, Chris Washburn was the No. 3.

Jordan, you know about. Washburn ranks as one of the NBA’s all-time busts, playing 72 games over two seasons, then getting banned for life for continued failed drug tests.

The No. 3 pick has produced Deron Williams, Carmelo Anthony, Pau Gasol, Chauncey Billups, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Dominique Wilkins, Buck Williams, Kevin McHale, Marques Johnson, Zelmo Beaty, Pete Maravich and Nate Thurmond.

But it’s also produced some busts — Adam Morrison. Rick Robey. Marvin Webster — and some mediocre careers.

So let’s go to the middle. There have been 52 drafts in NBA history. Toss out the 25 best players picked at No. 3 and the 25 worst players picked at No. 3, and who’s left in the middle is the kind of player you’re most likely to get.

Cheers & Jeers: OU AThletes receive Law Degrees
Cheers
→To OU athletes Myria Houlihan (track) and Heath Mueller (gymnastics), who received their law degrees last weekend.

→To OSU strength coach Rob Glass for not just hosting the state Special Olympics’ powerlifting competition in the Cowboy weight room, but for being an engaged host who interacted wonderfully with the athletes.

Jeers
→To OU president David Boren’s invitation to Sam Bradford to sit on the stage at commencement Friday night and be introduced for his Heisman-winning season. Does everything have to be about football? That was an affront to graduates, even the hard-core fans. That wasn’t the time or place.

→ To the Thunder’s NBA draft watch party at Riverwind Casino. Not exactly the most family-friendly venue.
