Tyson Chandler isn't returning to Oklahoma City after all.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti announced the team has rescinded a trade with the New Orleans Hornets for Chandler after Oklahoma City medical officials weren't satisfied with results of a physical taken Wednesday night.

Several media reports said the Thunder's concern was turf toe. Chandler had surgery on the toe two years ago, an injury that hampered him at times during last season's playoffs. With the trade deadline nearing today at 2 p.m., it now appears the Thunder won't make a major deal.

"Yesterday we were excited to add Tyson, but at the same time we have to make tough decisions," Presti said. "There were some things in the medical process, and outside consultants, that gave us some concern."

The deal, pending physicals, was to send Chris Smith and Joe Wilcox and the draft rights to DeVon Hardin to the Hornets for Chandler, a 7-foot-1 center with the reputation for being a defensive force and elite rebounder.

Chandler has missed the past 14 games with the Hornets with a severely sprained ankle but was hampered early in the season by a toe injury.

"We have to listen to the people (conducting) our medicals," Presti said. "We feel the right decision for us was to move in another direction.

What is turf toe?
It’s a condition typically involving hyperextension of the big toe that results in spraining or tearing of the ligaments at the joint.

It’s common in athletes and derived its name from being a common injury sustained by athletes who play on artificial turf.

The best treatment for turf toe is believed to be rest, allowing the inflammation to subside and the joint capsule to heal.
