Author Mel Odom (“The Rover,” “Apocalypse Dawn”) will attend SoonerCon this year, and he shared his plans with The Oklahoman.

“I’m going to be doing an interview of Keith Birdsong on Saturday at 12, and appearing on panels such as, ‘It Keeps Me Young: Why YA Makes Great Reading For Adults,’ ‘Formula Vs. Cliché:  How Many Sequels Are Too Many,’ ‘Chicken or the Egg,’ ‘Creating and Developing a Realistic Military,’ and ‘Dark and Gritty Ain’t So Pretty.’”

Odom, who has written more than 140 novels, also shared his thoughts on the current popularity of fantasy and multi-genre conventions.

“I think we’re experiencing a resurgence of fantasy-type conventions in general because people want to get out around kindred spirits.  Cons are a great place to meet people you’ve been tweeting and FB’ing with, and since you’ve had an online relationship with them, it’s not like meeting for the first time.  After all, SF fandom created the first fanfic (now a new launching platform for Amazon’s Kindle Worlds – I’ve got a Shadowman novella coming out soon) and the internet in general wouldn’t have come about if SF writers/fans hadn’t thought of it and fallen in love with it.”

SoonerCon runs Friday-Sunday at Reed Conference Center, 5800 Will Rogers Road, Midwest City.
