Oklahoma basketball: Jordan Woodard's free throws seal Sooners' win at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — There were no Oklahoma players throwing the upside-down Hook ’em Horns signs this time.

Saturday night, though, the Sooners didn’t need to taunt Texas with anything more than the result.

Sooners freshman guard Jordan Woodard scored 10 points in the final two minutes — all but two from the free-throw line — to give Oklahoma an 88-85 win over the Longhorns in both teams’ Big 12 openers Saturday at the Erwin Center.

During OU’s trip to Austin a season ago, Amath M’Baye taunted Texas fans with the sign after the Sooners took a 22-point lead with less than eight minutes to go.

Texas dominated from there and came out with a 92-86 overtime win.

There was no time for in-game taunting this time around for the Sooners after Texas led for much of the second half.

But Buddy Hield’s fourth 3-pointer of the night put the Sooners up two with just more than two minutes remaining after the Longhorns missed four consecutive free throws that could have stretched the lead to five.

After Texas briefly tied it, the Sooners controlled the game, pulling out a road win with a young team to give OU its first win in Austin since 2005.

“The opportunity was there to go either direction,” Sooners coach Lon Kruger said. “When you get a little bit of a lead inside the last minute, it’s hard to finish the game. It’s hard to get a win.

“These young guys, we gave up a couple buckets and I thought Texas hit a couple tough shots, I thought our guys played them pretty well but Texas executed. I thought our last minute was executed pretty well.”
