Oklahoma basketball notebook: Coaches worried about Sooners overlooking Red Raiders

With Kansas State next on the agenda, the worries might have been warranted. But the Sooners took care of business and beat Texas Tech, 81-63.

Before tipoff, some Oklahoma basketball staff members were a little worried about the game that the Sooners went on to win 81-63.

Texas Tech is not known as one of the stronger teams in the Big 12, so the staff thought the Sooners might underestimate the Red Raiders and look ahead to Kansas State.

But the Sooners led almost the entire game, starting with a little more than 16 minutes remaining in the first half.

COACHES VS. CANCER AWARENESS NIGHT

Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center was deemed the “Coaches vs. Cancer awareness night.”

Before tipoff, Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger was honored with the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award. The honor is given annually to a college coach who has “been significantly engaged in the program's fundraising, education and promotional initiatives and who has demonstrated leadership in supporting the American Cancer Society's fight to save lives from cancer.”

During halftime, two Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center cancer survivors were also recognized. The Stephenson Center is where Oklahoma deep snapper Austin Woods received his chemotherapy treatments.
