Oklahoma Board of Education delays release of controversial A-F school grades

The grading system of Oklahoma's 1,750 schools and each district has been contentious, with educators, adminstrators and parents packing the Oklahoma Board of Education's meeting Monday morning.

The board voted unanimously to delay the grade release.

Educators, administrators and parents packed the board room at a special meeting, and attendees stood outside in the halls.

More than a dozen people representing districts statewide signed up to address the board. Public comments about the issue lasted for nearly an hour with all speakers asking the board to delay the grade release.

“We applaud your effort in making the grade system,” said Anna King, president of the state PTA. “... We're asking that you guys put a delay on this. Take it back. Take some time, and bring it back.”

State schools Superintendent Janet Barresi said changes to A-F could be considered in the future.

“Some of it needs to be adjusted in law. Some of it needs to be adjusted in the rules,” Barresi said. “We have all of their suggestions down.”
