MIAMI — Authorities in Ottawa County say a 3-year-old boy is in good condition after he was shot in the leg by his 9-year-old brother.

Authorities say the 3-year-old was taken to a hospital in Miami at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. A local newspaper reports that the boys' mother told Ottawa County detectives that she was asleep on the sofa when her older son told her the younger boy had been accidentally shot.

Detectives say the 9-year-old opened the family's gun safe by using a key he found in the parents' bedroom. The boy told detectives that the gun accidentally discharged when he was holding it, striking the younger child.

Detective Derek Derwin says evidence found at the scene backed up the boy's story. Authorities say the younger child is in good condition in the hospital.
