— A couple were jailed after deputies found a badly bruised 6-year-old boy locked in a room in their home in Calumet, authorities said.

Edward Everett, 32, was arrested on complaints of child abuse and child neglect. Krystal Everett, 28, was arrested on a complaint of enabling child abuse.

Canadian County deputies went to the couple’s home Thursday after receiving a call indicating the child was being abused. The caller said the Everetts were abusing the child because they believed he was possessed by a demon, according to a news release from the Canadian County sheriff’s office.

At the home, deputies found the door was latched from the outside, and inside the child was wearing only underwear and was lying on a small mat.

The child had two black eyes, bruises covering his body and burns and sores. The Everetts told deputies the child’s injuries were self-inflicted.

The child told investigators he was fed only one meal a day and made to go to the bathroom in an apple juice bottle. He also said he was beaten with a belt and was being burned and shocked with a cattle prod, authorities said.

“This is one of the worst cases of child abuse and neglect I’ve ever seen,” Canadian County Sheriff Randall Edwards said.

The child was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and the rest of the children in the house were taken into protective custody by the state Department of Human Services.

Edward Everett was booked into Canadian County jail and was being held Friday in lieu of $150,000 bail. Krystal Everett was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. has disabled the comments for this article.
