— Three people were taken to the hospital Monday after a house fire in Piedmont, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to a house fire at 1808 Monroe Ave. NE, which is near Mustang Road and NW 164.

Emergency Medical Services Authority took three people to the hospital. Fire Chief Andy Logan said two of those injured were in serious condition. The other had minor injuries.

Family members said the fire broke out near their Christmas tree, but Logan said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Logan credited off-duty firefighter Sean Murray, who lives next door to the home. He called the fire in to authorities and helped pull the residents from the home before fire crews arrived.

“He is an outstanding firefighter and deserves a lot of credit,” Logan said.
