Nonprofit agencies are ready to charge into summer with camps and classes for young people.

Under Oklahoma City Public Schools' year-round schedule, summer break will begin June 1 and end July 31, returning those students to classes in August.

But local groups with camps scheduled in August haven't had much trouble finding late-summer campers. Six of the eight youth classes offered in August at CityArts Center had been filled by Thursday afternoon, according to its website. Two of three summer camps at the Oklahoma City Musuem of Art are sold out.

“What we found is the majority of our students come from outside Oklahoma City,” said Chandra Boyd, senior associate curator of education at the art museum.

Edmond, Norman and other metro-area school districts are still on the regular summer schedule, and those students sometimes look to Oklahoma City for summer activities.

Boyd said she has even seen families from other parts of the state stay in a hotel and visit downtown attractions while their children attended classes at the museum.

There is still time to register for most camps and classes, with a summer camp available for nearly every academic subject, sport and hobby.

Here's a sampling:

Oklahoma City Parks

The Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department is offering a variety of activities, some of which are free. Fishing classes will take place on Saturdays in June, July and August at four lakes. The classes are free and cover the basics of equipment and safety.

Oklahoma City's performing arts camp at 3401 NW Grand Blvd. has become a popular program. Three sessions, each producing a different play, are offered to children ages 6-18 for $165 per session.

Oklahoma City Community College

For the traditional summer sports, Oklahoma City Community College has the bases covered on its campus at 7777 S May Ave. with weeklong half-day camps for multiple sports during June and July for kids ages 6-14.
