Oklahoma City area schools closed as weather service predicts freezing rain in the metro by 7 a.m.

The National Weather Service predicts that freezing rain could hit the metro area before 7 a.m., as a strong upper storm system combines with a cold Canadian airmass to produce a major winter storm over the state.

Because of the severe weather, many metro schools, including Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Mid-Del, Mustang and Yukon schools are closed today.

Significant accumulations of ice will be possible especially across portions of southwest and central Oklahoma, forecasters say.

In addition to problems on the roads, ice accumulations on power lines along with gusty winds could lead to scattered power outages, the weather service said.

In northern Oklahoma, the main winter weather impact will come from heavy snow where up to 10 inches of snow may fall in some areas, forecasters warned.
