Oklahoma City attorney requests student contact information for marketing
Every district in Oklahoma was sent a public records request in January from Hickman Law Group, seeking to obtain student directory information that includes phone numbers and addresses.
An Oklahoma City attorney who battled the state Education Department in court to help establish an online charter school filed a public records request in January with every school district in the state for student's names, phone numbers and addresses.
Brad Clark, an attorney with Hickman Law Group, wouldn't say whether the requests were sent on behalf of Epic One on One Charter School, a virtual school he represented in court against the department.
“The request was made on behalf of a nonprofit organization that provides free education services to students,” Clark said, adding that they have several clients in education.
Clark said the student information will be used for marketing and outreach as the organization seeks to inform parents and students about education opportunities.
Epic One on One Charter School, chartered out of Graham Public Schools in Okfuskee County, is enrolling students from throughout the state for the fall 2011 school semester. The publicly funded school can enroll students from across the state in online curriculums provided by other companies.
Schools react
The public records requests surprised some school district officials who never had been asked to release the information before.
Duncan Public Schools Superintendent Sherry Labyer said her initial reaction was to check the legality of releasing the information.
