Oklahoma City Barons notebook: OKC to sign Jonathan Cheechoo?

Jonathan Cheechoo, a 32-year-old former NHL All-Star, attended the Barons' game Saturday night, fueling speculation the free agent forward will sign with Oklahoma City as early as Sunday.

Cheechoo played in 501 NHL games over seven seasons, six with the San Jose Sharks. He scored 305 NHL points, highlighted by a league-high 56 goals in 2005-06. Cheechoo has played the past two seasons in the AHL with Peoria and Worcester.

Barons general manager Bill Scott is expected to sign another player later this week in addition to Cheechoo.

“You'll find out very soon,” Scott said. “There are some good players out there, guys biding time, waiting for a deal.”

DANIS MAKES OILERS ROSTER

Yann Danis, the reigning AHL Goaltender of the Year, made the Edmonton Oilers' opening day roster. Danis, who is 13-12-3 with a 2.99 goals against average this season in OKC, will remain with the Oilers until veteran Nikolai Khabibulin (offseason hip surgery) returns.
