MOORE — Canterbury Choral Society is looking for singers as it holds youth chorus auditions for the launch of the Moore satellite program.
Canterbury youth choruses began 17 years ago and have been an artistic outlet for hundreds of children at the central location at Oklahoma City University.
Canterbury wanted the opportunity for more youths in grades two through six to engage in the curriculum-based approach, according to a news release.
As leaders examined ways to expand the program, the most appealing means of accomplishing the goal emerged as a satellite program in Moore, where three teachers have shown interest in teaching from the Canterbury curriculum.
Susan Pendergraft, Katie Holmes and Kayrne Urquhart agreed to take on the new satellite program for Moore and nearby cities and towns. Holmes will assume the Moore east choir conductor position, and Pendergraft and Urquhart will be co-conductors for the Moore west choir.
The Moore east auditions will be for singers from Norman and the following Moore schools: Apple Creek, Broadmoor, Bryant, Central, Heritage Trails, Kelly, Northmoore, Santa Fe, Sooner, Winding Creek, Plaza Towers and Houchin.
The Moore west auditions will be for singers from Bridge Creek, Tuttle, Newcastle, Blanchard and the following Moore schools: Briarwood, Earlywine, Eastlake, Fairview, Fisher, Southgate, Red Oak, Sky Ranch, Wayland Bonds, Oakridge, Kingsgate and South Lake.
Moore east auditions begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Emmaus Baptist Church, 16001 S Western Ave., and are scheduled in 5- to 10-minute increments, depending on the choir.
No preparation is required. Singers will be taken through some basic vocal and rhythm exercises and possibly be asked to sing “Happy Birthday,” “America the Beautiful” or “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Auditions for the west choir begin at 4 p.m. Sept. 16 and are scheduled in 5- to 10-minute increments at Mid-America Christian University, 3500 SW 119.
To schedule an audition, registration is required by calling 232-7464.
