United Methodist Church of the Servant and Gaillardia housing addition are co-sponsoring the “Fit to Serve” 5k run and one-mile fun walk at 4 p.m. Sunday to benefit City Care's Whiz Kids.

The run and 1-mile fun walk event is open to the public. Interested individuals may register at the church, 14343 N MacArthur by 3 p.m. Sunday.

Cost is $35 the day of the race, and includes a meal and awards celebration on the Gaillardia Country Club lawn immediately after the race.

This is the third consecutive year Church of the Servant has hosted the “Fit to Serve” event, and the first year it has partnered with Gaillardia.

The annual event carries the slogan “Big Feet Running for Little Feet,” and funds that were raised the past two years were used to buy car seats for children.

City Care's Whiz Kids is a faith-based, one-on-one volunteer tutoring/mentoring program that focuses on students in grades one through six who live in areas that have some of the highest dropout rates and lowest socioeconomic levels in Oklahoma City. Whiz Kids is proactive and preventive in nature, targeting inner-city schools and students who are reading below grade level and who could benefit most from a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.

Church of the Servant volunteers tutor students in the program each week.
