Oklahoma City church hosts Land Run-themed anniversary

First Christian Church of Oklahoma City recently celebrated its 124th anniversary with a Land Run-themed church service on the church's lawn.

Church members placed their tithes and offerings in a hat that was passed around by a woman dressed in a pioneer dress, apron and bonnet.

The Rev. John Malget watched his 19th-century headgear go from church member to church member and smiled broadly.

The moment was just one of several uncommon occurrences Sunday as First Christian Church of Oklahoma City celebrated its 124th church anniversary with a Land Run-themed service and dinner.

Leaders said the church at 3700 N Walker was founded shortly after the Land Run of April 1889. Malget, the church's senior minister, said the congregation wanted to celebrate the anniversary with an outdoor service on the church lawn.

The celebration included several pioneer elements and more than a few members, including Phil and Kathy Rattan and their son, Robbie, dressed in period clothing.

Before the anniversary celebration, members gathered for coffee around a campfire.

A covered wagon with wooden spokes and steel rims sat nearby and included all sorts of food items used by several church members who camped overnight.
