This is Ryan Orland’s second year as a counselor at Oklahoma City Community College’s summer camps.
“I mean, it’s the best job I’m going to have,” Orland said. “I get to play basketball and capture the flag for a couple of hours.”
The college holds weekly camps for children and young adults throughout June and July.
Sports and recreation specialist Eric Watson said the camps are offered in three categories: sports, a general activity camp and the fit kids camp.
The sports camps range from traditional activities, like basketball, to more creative offerings such as a jazz and hip-hop dance camp.
Becky Capps, the mother of Jacob Stearns and Nicholas Capps, dropped off her two boys about 7:30 a.m. on the second day of camp. The brothers were enrolled in basketball camp, and both said they liked learning new things every day.
Becky Capps cited several reasons for choosing OCCC.
“One, it’s convenient; two, it’s reasonably priced. You’re looking at $100 to $65 a week. I mean, you can’t go to day care for that,” Capps said.
She said she’s a fan of all the activities available, that both her sons enjoy going, and she feels confident in the staff.
Watson said the counselors for the general activity and fit kids camps are state-certified physical education teachers. He said he wanted a more rounded approach to exercise and activity in both camps, not just a heavy emphasis on sports.
Camps fill up quickly and average about 150 kids a week. “They come rushing in here,” he said.
The cost per child varies on the type of camp. Sports camps are $65 a week. The general activity and half-day fit kids camps are $45 per week, or $65 with swimming lessons, and the full-day fit kids camp ranges in price from $80 to $100.
Students enrolled in the sports camps get a bonus. Watson said on the last day of camp, “the coaches will, at that point, kind of recognize all the kids, and give everyone a certificate. It can just be most improved, or just a variety of things of what they recognize kids for, once they get to that point.”
