Oklahoma City district to showcase high school academies
Oklahoma City Public Schools will host a showcase night featuring the career academies at six district high schools. The event is designed for middle school students.
Oklahoma City Public Schools will host an event to introduce middle school students to the career academies available at district high schools.
The Career Academy Showcase is open to seventh- and eighth-grade students and their parents. The event will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17 at U.S. Grant High School, 5016 S Pennsylvania.
Career academies offer specialty curriculum, work-based learning and community partnerships.
“We want our students to be ahead of the curve when leaving high school,” Oklahoma City Superintendent Karl Springer said in a statement.
“This program will do that and offer them an opportunity to learn about stable and growing career fields.”
Six district high schools have academies: engineering at Capitol Hill, finance at John Marshall, health at Northwest Classen, information technology at Oklahoma Centennial, hospital and tourism at Star Spencer, and health and engineering at Northeast Academy.
An academy of law and public safety will launch at Douglass Mid-High School next year.
Eventually, every high school will offer an academy. Future academies include health at U.S. Grant and information technology at Southeast.
