Oklahoma City drama teacher Michael Payne has won the opportunity to appear with Brooke Shields in the upcoming movie “The Hot Flashes.”

Payne, a teacher at Classen School for Advanced Studies, entered a contest held by American Fidelity Assurance Company (AFA) for a cameo appearance as a teacher in “The Hot Flashes” and a trip to New Orleans for the filming, according to an AFA news release.

Contestants had to submit a 100-word essay on why they should be selected. Payne's creative entry took the form of a top-10 list of reasons, ending with working with Brooke Shields being on his bucket list.

The cameo involves a scene with Shields. The film also stars Daryl Hannah, Wanda Sykes, Virginia Madsen and Camryn Manheim.

“The Hot Flashes” is about an unlikely basketball team of unappreciated middle-aged Texas women, all former high school champs, who challenge the current arrogant high school girls' state champs to raise money for breast cancer prevention. Sparks fly as the women go to comic extremes to prove themselves on and off the court, become a national media sensation, and gain a new lease on life.

Representatives from AFA and the Oklahoma City School District superintendent's office surprised Payne in his classroom recently to share the news. Payne, a former Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, will be able to use the experience as a teaching aid, according to the release.

“This was the experience of a lifetime,” Payne said. “Brooke was awesome — she was down to earth and made everyone comfortable.”
