Oklahoma City fire chaplain Ted Wilson was in good condition Friday after surgery to receive the liver of slain Nichols Hills Fire Chief Keith Bryan, hospital officials said.

Gary Sigle, director of the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute at Integris Baptist Medical Center, said the transplant was performed Thursday. He said Wilson was doing well on Friday morning and breathing on his own without a ventilator.

Bryan was an organ donor. About two weeks ago, Bryan made the comment that if anything happened to him he would donate his liver to Wilson, who was his friend and who had been on a transplant waiting list, Sigle said.

Bryan, 52, was shot in the head at his home Tuesday and died early Wednesday at OU Medical Center. His wife, Becky Bryan, was booked into the Canadian County jail on Friday on a murder complaint in connection with his death.

Wilson's path to chaplaincy started more than 30 years ago, when he was serving in the U.S. Army Reserves and studying theology at a Kentucky Bible college. He served as a youth minister in Heavener and received a theology degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Wilson later went to U.S. Army chaplain school and served in that capacity. He has been chaplain for the Oklahoma City Fire Department since 1989.

Services for Bryan are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at The Bridge Assembly of God in Mustang.
