At first, Glenda Sligar thought her parakeets were dead.

Melody and Lyric were at the bottom of their cage, not moving. The firefighters suggested she take them outside so they could get some air, away from the smoke.

On Saturday afternoon, Sligar stood outside of her smoke-damaged apartment as Melody and Lyric flew about in their cage.

“They weren't breathing at all, and remarkably, they're revived,” Sligar said.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, Oklahoma City fire crews responded to an apartment fire at Brighton Place, 7000 S Walker Ave.

Oklahoma City Fire Battalion Chief Al Cothran said crews evacuated about 10 units at the apartment complex near Interstate 240 and Walker. It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Cothran estimated there was about $50,000 damage to the apartments.

The cause of the blaze hadn't been determined as of Saturday night. Cothran said the fire doesn't appear suspicious and likely was accidental.

There were no injuries, but Red Cross volunteers assisted the residents who needed help, he said.

Sligar said she is thankful to be alive. She said her bed, curtains and clothes likely were damaged from the smoke.

Sligar, who works at a day care center, isn't sure what she'll do next.

“I don't know, probably move,” Sligar said. “Probably spend Christmas moving.”
