At least six people were treated by paramedics Thursday for heat-related injuries, causing the Emergency Medical Services Authority to issue its first heat alert of the year.

Temperatures were in the mid-90s in the Oklahoma City area Thursday, with heat indexes of about 100 degrees.

EMSA spokeswoman Lara O'Leary said paramedics got their first heat-related call about 11 a.m., when a man collapsed while mowing his yard.

In addition to the six confirmed heat calls, three other incidents were suspected to be heat-related, O'Leary said.

“At this point, EMSA believes the heat is having a serious health impact in the Oklahoma City area,” she said. “People going outside should pre-hydrate and continue to hydrate throughout the day.

“They should take frequent breaks, stay in the shade and wear lighter-colored clothing.”

O'Leary said people also should check on older friends and loved ones and anyone without air conditioning as the heat continues.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s again Friday, with heat indexes approaching triple digits.

“Everyone always says, ‘I didn't think it would ever happen to me,'” O'Leary said. “Even the healthiest and strongest people can end up becoming victims of the heat.”
