Darryl Davis Jr. never got to meet his son.

Davis was shot to death a year ago over a $250 loan he gave to a co-worker, according to court testimony. His girlfriend was two months pregnant when he died and gave birth to their child, Dakota, in August.

Davis attended Del City High School. He played football and wrestled, but dropped out after his father died. He went back to school, got his diploma from Capitol Hill and went to plumbing school.

Smith said he went to work at a furniture store to help pay for the baby's expenses.

“He was doing what he was supposed to do,” Smith said. “He was an expectant father working to try to provide.”

Police and prosecutors charged Davis' co-worker, Christian Cortuan Castro, 22, with his murder. Another co-worker, Nelson Troy Williams, was charged with accessory to murder. Williams testified against Castro at a July preliminary hearing.
