Some days I'm OK, and sometimes you just break down. You can't control it.”

Kim Smith,
Mother of Darryl Davis,

killed last year

Kim Smith, Davis' mother, said it breaks her heart to know her grandson won't get to know his father.

“I look at him, and I see my son,” Kim Smith said. “He was ready to be a dad. He wanted to teach his son how to play football and wrestle and play guitar.”

Davis attended Del City High School. He played football and wrestled, but dropped out after his father died. He went back to school, got his diploma from Capitol Hill and went to plumbing school.

Smith said he went to work at a furniture store to help pay for the baby's expenses.

“He was doing what he was supposed to do,” Smith said. “He was an expectant father working to try to provide.”

Police and prosecutors charged Davis' co-worker, Christian Cortuan Castro, 22, with his murder. Another co-worker, Nelson Troy Williams, was charged with accessory to murder. Williams testified against Castro at a July preliminary hearing.
