Oklahoma City has experienced 85 homicides this year, mostly concentrated in the central, east and south sides of the city. Excluding 1995 — the year of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building — that number is nearing a two-decade high. The Oklahoman explored a small section of northeast Oklahoma City near the state Capitol where 14 people lost their lives this year after deadly violence. Below, read more about the victims.
Robert Williams, 48, was reported missing before being found dead Feb. 6 in the back of a pickup at NE 15 and Bryant. Henry Allen Long, 46, who knew Williams, was charged in the killing. Williams had been beaten with some type of bar and shot numerous times, police reported.
Monretta Louise Olden, 65, a retired bus driver, died inside her home at 1132 Windemere Drive after a drive-by shooting March 9. Officers who responded saw shell casings and bullet holes at the front door. Her case remains unsolved, police said.
Israel Jackson, 24, and Shavon Johnson, 26, were shot to death June 7 at Sooner Haven Apartments, 1444 NE 36. Joshua Londale Rogers, 27, was charged in the deaths. Police said Rogers is a member of the 107 Hoover Crips gang, whose turf includes the apartment complex where the victims were shot.
Robin Leander Howard, 54, died in June after a physical confrontation with police officers Jeff Coffey and Doug Grady. Officers said Howard, 54, led them on a chase June 19 that ended in the 1400 block of Monticello Court, about 150 yards from the small home he shared with his mother. He died June 23 of pneumonia. The state medical examiner listed the manner of death as homicide and the cause of death as acute pneumonia caused by blunt force trauma to the chest, according to an autopsy report. Howard's autopsy report lists numerous injuries, including several broken ribs and a badly fractured left arm. The district attorney did not press charges against officers involved, though an internal investigation is ongoing.
Tracy Shane Williams Jr., 30, was shot to death June 30 at Sooner Haven Apartments, 1444 NE 36. His case, which police believe has ties to gang violence, remains unsolved.
