Oklahoma City looks to even playing field for airport car rentals

The Oklahoma City Council is considering an ordinance that would require the same fees charged to on-site Will Rogers World Airport car rental companies to off-site companies serving the airport.

All rental car companies within a 10-mile radius of Will Rogers World Airport will have to pay the same fees for airport customers if the Oklahoma City Council approves a proposed new ordinance.

The ordinance would impose the same fee on rental car companies that operate away from the airport as paid by those with offices at the airport.

Currently, on-site car rental companies pay the city a 10 percent commission fee for all airport customers.

“The fee is for access to the rental car customer base that the airport creates,” city Airports Department Director Mark Kranenburg said. “Off-airport companies access this same customer base, but do not pay a concession fee to the (city's) airport trust.”

‘A parity issue'

Kranenburg said the idea is to give all of the rental car companies a level playing field.

“This is a parity issue,” Kranenburg said.

Companies that aren't among the eight that operate on the airport grounds and pay the 10 percent commission still have access to the customer base by picking people up at the airport in shuttles.
