Fire District Chief Mike Walker said neighbors of the man at 12116 Cliff Rose Drive near NW 122 and Meridian Avenue reported the house fire about 2 p.m.. When firefighters arrived they found flames coming from the wood-shingle roof.

The occupant of the house said he was smoking a cigarette and fell asleep. He woke up and his bed was on fire so he got out of the house, Walker said.

The man, who is in his 40s, refused medical treatment and was taken to a detoxification facility. Walker did not release his name. The man suffered singed hair.

Firefighters managed to keep flames from spreading to neighboring houses, Walker said.

The damage estimate is $75,000.

I thought that the nasty tasting fire safe cigarettes that the state legislature has forced upon all Oklahoma smokers was supposed to prevent this. All I see them doing so far is not burning properly and giving me a headache? Oh, and making the fire fall off the end. I wish the state nannys (I mean legislature) would leave us alone and quit trying to do "what's best for me"!

Couldn't he have refused the detoxification treatment as well? I don't blame him for refusing treatment and he is lucky he only has to suffer $75,000 in damages as opposed to the thousands that would have been tacked on for unnecessary medical "treatment". And so much for the new cigarette law that was supposed to prevent this from happening.

Chris, they took him there for smoke inhalation. What are you thinking?

Why was he taken to a detoxification facility? Must have been drunk or drugged out, I presume but once again a story just reports part of the facts.
