The Oklahoma City Mayor's Committee on Disability Concerns honored outstanding Oklahomans with disabilities and their advocates Tuesday at its annual awards luncheon at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
The luncheon theme was “Street Smarts for People with Disabilities 2012” as part of the committee's work to increase safety for people with disabilities on Oklahoma City streets.
Mayor Mick Cornett and Pam Henry, committee chairwoman, presented the awards. Kevin Ogle, KFOR-4 news anchor, was emcee at the 22nd annual awards luncheon.
Award winners
George Lewis Advocacy Award: Shannon Wrights, dance teacher for students with disabilities
Employer of the Year: Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma
Public Personnel Employee of the Year: Jody Harlan, public information administrator, state Department of Rehabilitation Services
Media Public Affairs Award: Meg Alexander, reporter, and Mark Paris, photojournalist, KFOR-4
Media Public Service Award: Matt Dinger, reporter, The Oklahoman
Special awards: Ron Newmann, chief inspector of paving, drainage and buildings, city of Oklahoma City; Candace Looper, special-education teacher, Moore Public Schools, and director of Special Dreams Ballet; and Northeast Missionary Baptist Church and Dana Greer.
Clearing the Path Award: TAP Architecture and McCaleb Homes; Jack Mills, Golden Pond Universal Design Housing
Don Davis Award: Jesa Lopez, Miss Wheelchair Oklahoma 2012
Committee Member of the Year: Ken Wyatt
