Patsy Parker is the winner of the Bernhardt Academic Excellence Award for 2014 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. Parker is chairman of the Department of Accounting, Computer Science and Entrepreneurship. She received a $5,000 cash award, clock, pen and medallion. SWOSU alumni Dr. William and Theta Juan Bernhardt, of Midwest City, are sponsors of the annual award to a faculty member who exhibits exceptional achievement in teaching, scholarship and service. Parker grew up near Granite. She worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture before earning a master’s degree in education and landing her first teaching position in 1982 at Sayre Public Schools. She earned her doctor of philosophy from the University of Oklahoma in 2006 and accepted a position on the Weatherford campus in 2007.

Dee Ann Moran, a teacher at Winding Creek Elementary in the Moore School District, is the winner of a $2,500 grant through Farmers Insurance’s “Thank a Million Teachers” program, a national initiative that invites America to offer thanks to teachers who have made a difference in their lives. Due to tight budgets and last year’s devastating tornado, funds to replace cracked furniture in Moran’s classsroom have not been available. Moran said she plans to use her grant to provide furniture that will enable her students to focus on learning, not on pinching and uncomfortable desks and chairs.
