A church name change typically isn't a frivolous venture.

A metro-area congregation's recent decision to change its moniker is no exception to that rule.

The Cathedral, an Oklahoma City church also known as Cathedral of Praise, has a new name.

The new name of the megachurch at 7700 N Council is The Gate Church.

Church pastor the Rev. Tony Miller announced the name change at the church's Sept. 30 worship services.

Some area residents may recall that the church was started by the Rev. Ron Dryden. Miller and his wife, Kathy, became its pastors in 2006 after Dryden stepped down to pursue other interests. The church, under Dryden's leadership, was well-known for acquiring and expanding the KOKF-FM 90.9 Christian radio station. RDM Enterprises, whose president was Dryden, sold the station to Air One Radio in 2006.

Miller, 55, told me that the congregation has 30 years of history behind it and recent years have been marked by a time of transition.

“We felt like a brand new season had come,” he said.

Miller said church leaders are pleased with many things that have happened in recent years, particularly that about 3,000 people have accepted Christ as their savior while at the church. He said average Sunday attendance is about 2,200.
