Oklahoma City is being recognized for its hairiest, boot-wearing, beer-drinking citizens, with the title of “America's Manliest City.”

The research study, backed by Mars Chocolate North America, COMBOS snacks, and researcher Bert Sperling, took into account the number of home improvement stores, steak houses and other “manly” features per capita in 50 major metropolitan areas, and then ranked them. The study, released June 11, also factored in the amount of “girly” amenities the city had to offer, like nail salons, sushi bars and fashion boutiques.

Sperling, the man behind the “Best Places to Live” studies, said he takes his scientifically-backed research seriously, but understands the fun nature of projects like this.

“This is one of our more light-hearted ones,” Sperling said. “We looked at the places with the biggest dose of stereotypical manliness, and Oklahoma City is right up there of course, number one this year.”

Sperling said data from the study confirmed that Oklahoma City leads the nation per capita in the following categories: drivers of full-size pickups and American-made cars, number of western apparel stores and the number of people who like to work on automobiles, fish, hunt, ride motorcycles and do woodwork.

Those attributes ranked Oklahoma City over Columbia, S.C., Memphis, Tenn., Nashville, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala. to round out the top five.

Brett McKay, founder of, “The Art of Manliness,” an Internet blog that receives more than 8 million page views a month, and has nearly 40,000 Twitter followers, said he understands why Oklahoma City grabbed the top spot.
