Police have released the names of two officers involved in a fatal shooting Wednesday along Interstate 35 in south Oklahoma City.

Simon P. Ramirez, 30, was shot and killed in the 5100 block of southbound Interstate 35 about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

The officers were detective Sgt. Tony Foreman, a 23-year veteran, and officer Samuel Pagel, who has been a police officer for two years, Nelson said.

Wednesday's incident started when officers located a stolen car in the area of SE 44 and Shields Boulevard, Nelson said. As officers approached the vehicle in the parking lot of a gasoline station a woman got out and ran into the gas station. She was taken into custody.

Ramirez ran south along the east side of the Interstate 35 Service Road with officers chasing him on foot.

Other officers arrived and Ramirez jumped the concrete barricades and ran west across I-35. Ramirez pointed a gun at several motorists as he fled across the highway during rush-hour traffic, Nelson said.

About seven officers responded to the call for assistance during the pursuit. Ramirez pointed his weapon at officers and refused their commands for him to stop, police said. Two officers fired their guns, killing the suspect. Five officers witnessed the shooting from various locations on the highway, police said.

Southbound I-35 was closed for about 5½ hours.

Foreman and Pagel were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigations, Nelson said.
