Oklahoma City pharmacist made up account of being chased by red truck, prosecutors say

Prosecutors wanted mental examination.

Three months after fatally shooting a robber, Oklahoma City pharmacist Jerome Ersland claimed a red truck chased him down the highway and tried to push his car into a culvert.

The claim is found in once-secret court records that were unsealed Wednesday in the controversial Oklahoma County criminal case.

Ersland, 59, is serving a life term in prison for first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said Ersland claimed to have reported the chase to the Grady County sheriff's office but no records where found to confirm that.

Prosecutors last year told District Judge Tammy Bass-LeSure about the claim and other statements they called completely unfounded. They told the judge the pharmacist “seems to have experienced a break with reality.”

Competency questioned

Prosecutors asked the judge to order a mental health examination to determine whether Ersland was competent to face trial.

Defense attorneys opposed the request.
