“It's been a year and a half,” Adams said.
“And they have crawled in every crevice and crack that has ever existed. And they have found absolutely zero. But they continue to have him under this cloud of suspicion.”
Adams said a police investigator asked him earlier this year whether Williams ever gave him inside information. “It's absurd,” Adams said. “I get everything that the prosecutor has so I don't know what he could possibly provide me that I don't already get.
“It's frustrating, because they just keep throwing darts at the wall hoping that they're going to hit something,” the attorney said. “What's wrong with him being friends with a defense lawyer?”
Williams came under investigation after a police detective, Matthew McRorie, made a series of accusations in two memos in December 2011.
“I was relayed information about a recent event concerning a case under indictment where the U.S. attorney's office was hoping to get the defendant to cooperate against a larger criminal organization,” McRorie wrote of one of the accusations. “One of the secretaries at the U.S. attorney's office found Williams reading through the case files. This rose a red flag in the U.S. attorney's office because Williams should have had no association with the case and had no reason to be going through the files.
“Phil Williams' close relationship (with) Scott Adams is a cause for concern not only among investigators on this case but also … prosecuting authorities,” McRorie wrote.
Adams contends the real reason for the investigation is that police officials were upset Williams had uncovered wrongdoing by a police captain, Jay Digby.
Citty last year denied that claim. “There's no retaliation,” the police chief said.
Williams uncovered the wrongdoing during an investigation into a massive theft-ring operation, Adams said.
Digby, who retired earlier this year, said Williams' allegations against him were looked at very thoroughly.
“There was nothing …. It's just ridiculous. It's simply a ruse,” Digby said. “I retired at 35 years because I wanted to. I've got a pristine record. I don't know what else to tell you.”
One of the admitted thieves in the ring testified at a court hearing this year that Digby did nothing when the captain spotted him chopping up a stolen vehicle. Digby said, “That's absolutely wrong. … I'm not guilty of anything. … He's a liar.”
