The Oklahoma City police sergeant who was honored last year for selfless dedication to children sexually abused four teenage boys in his care, prosecutors alleged Friday in a 37-count criminal charge.

Maurice A. Martinez, 44, also violently struck one of those boys in the head, prosecutors alleged in the charge. Police reported finding a video of that blow on the officer's computer.

The veteran patrol officer is being held without bail in the Oklahoma County jail. Martinez has been under investigation since January when one teenager — an adopted son — told elders at his church he had been molested.

Defense attorney Irven Box said, “We, after four months, finally have definite times, places and alleged victims identified, so we'll start preparing a defense.”

The attorney said he will seek to have Martinez released on bail.

Martinez has been a foster parent for 11 years and “has had numerous boys under his care during those years,” police reported. The Department of Human Services has said Martinez cared for about 60 foster children.

He adopted some of the boys, police said.

Martinez faces 32 felony counts of sexual child abuse. He faces three other felony counts — threatening a witness, child pornography possession and child abuse.

He faces two misdemeanor counts — harboring an endangered runaway child and conspiracy to obstruct an officer.

Most of the sexual abuse counts involve the adopted son who first reported being molested. Prosecutors alleged that adopted son was sexually abused 23 times since Aug. 15, 2009. Prosecutors also alleged Martinez made threats this month to keep the adopted son from testifying.

The teenager was found April 14 with a family in Tooele, Utah. Police reported Martinez gave the teenager $400 in March to go to Utah on a bus. Police reported Martinez forced the teenager to make a video and to sign a letter recanting the accusations.

Prosecutors and police identified the other sexual abuse victims as two other adopted sons and a former foster son.
