Body armor stopped some of the bullets fired at her but she was hit multiple times when she got out of her car near NW 38 and Miller Avenue and returned fire. It is not known when she will return to full duty, Stewart said.

Alex Mercado, 17, Hector Escalante, 18, and Vilma Escalante, 52, remain at the Oklahoma County jail on charges of shooting with intent to kill in the incident.

Prosecutors say that Vilma Escalante, Hector Escalante and Alex Mercado acted together to shoot Lawson numerous times. The officer was shot in the face, body and legs but survived. Prosecutors allege Alex Mercardo fired an assault rifle.

Police said the suspects are the wife and sons of Hector Mercado, who was pulled over in front of his house about 25 minutes before the shooting.

While the shooting was happening, an Oklahoma City police officer wrote in an affidavit, Vilma Escalante was pleading with the deputy to release Hector Mercado, who had been arrested in front of his house.
