As a graduate of Northeast High School, Bryce Bandy understands that many students in Oklahoma City aren’t able to come to school with all the supplies they need. So when the co-founder of Keep It Local OK was approached to help with a citywide school supply drive to help students and teachers, it was an easy sell.
“It helps out the kids, but it’s also just an investment in our community and our future,” Bandy said. “We wanted to be able to help out.”
The Team Up OKC school supply drive ends Monday. Comtech owner Michael Morrison founded the event four years ago after seeing one of his son’s elementary school classmates carrying his supplies to school in a pillowcase. He realized his ability to provide for all his son’s school needs wasn’t a possibility for every family. The supply drive is a small way the entire Oklahoma City community can help, he said.
The Foundation for Oklahoma City Public Schools collects the donations and distributes the supplies through its Teachers Warehouse. Since creating Teachers Warehouse in 2008, The Foundation has distributed more than $1 million in supplies to teachers and students in Oklahoma City Public Schools.
Teachers can order supplies monthly through an online store. That allows teachers to choose the supplies they need most. The warehouse is stocked with supplies from corporate and individual donors, and volunteers pack and prepare 700 to 800 orders for pickup each month. The most sought-after supplies include reams of white and colored copy paper, crayons, markers, rulers, safety scissors, glue and dry-erase markers.
