Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were each selected to the 28-man pool for the 2014-16 USA Men’s National Team, from which the 2014 USA World Championship team and the 2016 Olympic team will be selected (pending Olympic qualification).
Durant and Westbrook were each a part of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team that won gold in London. Eleven players from that team are on the 28-man list released Thursday.
“This is the first step of building the USA Basketball National Team pool of players for 2014-16. This roster is extremely talented, deep and versatile,” USA Basketball Chairman and National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo said. “We are very fortunate to have 11 of the 12 members who won gold at the London Olympics wanting to be part of the national team program again.”
Notable players include four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James, former OU standout Blake Griffin (L.A. Clippers) and former Thunder guard James Harden (Houston). And Durant has already committed to play in the 2014 World Championships this summer.
Not on the list is Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade.
Not surprisingly DWade's time with USA Basketball has ended. Colangelo: "We appreciate the service he gave us but it's time to move on."— Sekou Smith (@SekouSmithNBA) January 23, 2014
