Oklahoma City Thunder: How Memphis center Marc Gasol handled foul trouble

Q&A: Memphis center Marc Gasol talks about how the Grizzlies handled the Thunder's adjustments, how he managed to play through foul trouble and how the Memphis bench impacted Game 3.

How effective were the Thunder's adjustments?

Gasol: “Of course they made adjustments. First half, they tried to burn us. We overhelped too much, and they did a good job of finding the open guy. We go to help, and what happens is that it is hard to box out when you lose your position defensively. Then the offensive guy has position for the rebound, and he usually is going to get it. We have to do a better job of everybody going back in the paint and rebounding.”

When you got your fourth foul in the third quarter, why didn't you come out of the game?

Gasol: “We talked about it. Lionel (Hollins) looked at me, and I told him that I could stay. Of course, I always try to play without fouling, but that foul I had to take, it was a wide-open dunk, and I had to foul even though he (Kendrick Perkins) made both free throws. Some people say to let that one go, but that is not my nature. I can't do that. I tried hard to play without fouling, even though I had five fouls tonight.”

How good was the Grizzlies bench tonight?

Gasol: “They played good. We need more of that. They have to play consistently like they did tonight. We are going to need more of that going forward. I am happy with the way they played. They played with confidence. We have to keep it up.”

Overall thoughts on the game?

Gasol: “I feel like every game we have gotten better, and today we were not better than last game. That is always our next goal, to be better next game. Tonight we had too many breakdowns defensively. We were not aware. We did not protect the paint. There were too many points in the paint and too many fast-break points. We have to do better than that.”
