Oklahoma City Thunder: Magic number time in the Western Conference

With only nine days left in the NBA regular season, it’s magic number time in the Western Conference. The West standings are mostly slotted. The Spurs lead the Thunder by 4 1/2 games for first place, the Clippers lead the Rockets by three games for third, the Rockets lead the Blazers by two games for fourth. But there is enough drama to keep an eye on how the West will shake out.

Here is the outlook for the West playoff contenders:

 

San Antonio 60-17

Games remaining: 5. Two home, three road. Three vs. playoff contenders, two vs. also-rans.

Back-to-backs: one.

Schedule: at Minnesota, at Dallas, Phoenix, at Houston, LA Lakers.

Likely record: 3-2, so 63-19.

Magic number to finish first: Two.

 

Oklahoma City 55-21

Games remaining: 6. Two home, four road. Five vs. playoff contenders, four vs. also-rans.

Back-to-backs: two.

Schedule: at Sacramento, at LA Clippers, New Orleans, at Indiana, at New Orleans, Detroit.

Likely record: 5-1, so 60-22.

Magic number to finish second: Five.

 

LA Clippers 55-23

Games remaining: 4. Three home, one road. Two vs. playoff contenders, two vs. also-rans.

Back-to-backs: one.

Schedule: Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Denver, at Portland.

Likely record: 3-1, so 58-24.

Magic number to finish third: Two.

 

Houston 51-25

Games remaining: 6. Two home, four road. One vs. playoff contenders, five vs. also-rans.

Back-to-backs: two.

Schedule: at LA Lakers, at Denver, at Minnesota, New Orleans, San Antonio, at New Orleans.

Likely record: 5-1, so 56-26.

Magic number to finish fourth: Three.

 

Portland 50-28

Games remaining: 4. Three home, one road. Two vs. playoff contenders, two vs. also-rans.

Back-to-backs: none.

Schedule: Sacramento, at Utah, Golden State, LA Clippers.

Likely record: 4-0, so 54-28.

Magic number to finish fifth: Four.

 

Golden State 48-29

Schedule: Denver, at LA Lakers, at Portland, Minnesota, at Denver.

Magic number to finish seventh: Five.

 

Phoenix 46-31
