Oklahoma City Thunder: What the NBA's new advanced data can tell us about the Thunder

Taking a closer look at some of the more interesting statistics produced by the NBA's latest statistical advancement: Mounted Sports VU devices in the rafters of every NBA arena.

Starting this season, the NBA has installed useful high-tech cameras in the rafters of every arena.

The mounted Sports VU devices track all player movement throughout the game, before sending the data to computers for processing.

It's the latest — and maybe greatest — addition to the league's progressive advanced statistical approach.

And even though we can't make definitive conclusions from a six-game sample size, let's take a look at some interesting Thunder-related data after two weeks:

Stat: Steven Adams gathers in 69.4 percent of contested rebounds

Takeaway: That's the best percentage in the NBA among guys who play 15 or more minutes per game. And it gives us definitive proof to what we think we're seeing: OKC's rookie center is fantastic on the glass, using his big body and strong hands in traffic to pull down rebounds in a crowd.

Stat: Russell Westbrook possesses the ball for 6.0 minutes per game.

Takeaway: You'd expect the top of this list to be point guard heavy. And it is. The first 27 are all PGs. So, more interesting than Westbrook's 6.0 mpg number is where that places him. Westbrook is 12th. John Wall (7.8 mpg), Chris Paul (7.5 mpg) and Damian Lillard (6.9 mpg) make up the top three.
