Master Sgt. Gary Knight said officers were called about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday to 3144 NW 48 in reference to a drowning.

He said the mother left the child in the bathtub briefly to take the trash outside and accidentally locked herself out of the house. She smashed a window to get back inside and found the baby face down in the bathtub, police said.

The toddler, identified as Jose Medina, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the drowning appears to be an accident and they don't expect charges to be filed against the mother.
