A woman has been arrested in the death of her 2-year-old niece, Oklahoma City police reported Tuesday.

Jessica Chau, 2, of Oklahoma City, died at OU Medical Center of injuries consistent with homicide, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.

“She had been in the care of an aunt,” Knight said. “The aunt had been baby-sitting her. That's apparently when the injuries occurred.”

Van Le, 49, of Oklahoma City, was taken to the Oklahoma County jail on Monday.

Police were called Saturday to OU Medical Center regarding a critically injured 2-year-old girl who was brought there by ambulance from the 1200 block of NW 28, Knight said.

Jessica died Monday as a result of her injuries.

The cause of the child's death is pending the outcome of a pathologist's examination, said Amy Elliott, spokeswoman for the state medical examiner.

The child and her mother, Mina Chau, have lived in a northwest Oklahoma City apartment complex for a year, the building's owner said.

“She's a very nice lady, and she's just devastated,” said the property owner, who did not wish to give her name.

She called the mother a model tenant and said her young daughter was a friendly child who always waved hello.
