It’s not a mystery who made history. At 12:30 p.m. on June 25, the millionth guest came through the zoo’s turnstiles, setting a record for the zoo during a fiscal year and during its 110th birthday year.
Megan Tracy, and her two sons, Cadon, 6, and Cason, 3, of Hobart, drove two hours to became the zoo’s “one in a million.” They received a surprise safari adventure from the zoo and Oklahoma Zoological Society, including a five-year, ZooFriends’ membership, a Behind the Scenes tour, a $100 zoo gift card and fun zoo memorabilia. A cousin, Courtlyn Elkins from Oklahoma City, joined the family at the zoo prior to the winning announcement.
“It was so important that we have a good time and I prayed this morning that we would have a fun day at the zoo,” Tracy said. “I had no idea that we would be treated like royalty.”
Zoo staff members were on hand to congratulate the Tracy family and celebrate the momentous occasion. The celebration is the first for new executive director Dwight Lawson.
“This has been a great year to join the OKC Zoo. Celebrating this historical occasion with the Tracys and staff just emphasizes what an exciting time of growth it is for the zoo and community,” said Lawson.
Tracy was the millionth visitor for the fiscal year running from July 1, 2013 to June 30 of this year. By the time the fiscal year ended, the zoo had welcomed 1,022,856 visitors, according to zoo communications director Tara Henson.
